Our Food

Book a table

We’ve won many awards for our food over the years, something we put down to our field-to-fork philosophy, our home-grown ingredients and our talented kitchen team.

We breed our own pedigree shorthorns and rare breed pork; the roe deer and red deer venison we serve is from our woods and fells and we grow seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs in our kitchen gardens at Askham Hall, just two miles down the road. We forage our land for wild garlic, mushrooms and berries and our free-range fell lamb comes from our own flock of Rough Fells which is looked after by our owner Charles up on the fells above Askham – they are guardians of the fell, making the most of the rich variety of herbs and grasses it offers, which gives them a wonderful rich flavour. Our clever Head Chef Paul McKinnon changes our main menu regularly, depending on what produce is brought in by our gardeners and local suppliers.

You’ll find the same love and care in our wine list as in our food, as we try to source as much as we can from small, family-run vineyards with strong connections to their communities. We believe our wine list is one of the most interesting and diverse in Cumbria and we’re proud to offer a lovely range by the glass to suit every palate and pocket, supplied by our independent wine merchant Stainton in Kendal. We even have a selection of wines from our Askham Hall Cellars; these are particularly noteworthy as they benefit from having had the chance to mature and are in perfect condition to enjoy now.

You can choose to eat in our restaurant and observe our chefs at work in our open kitchen, enjoy a peaceful spot tucked away in one of our alcoves, or if you fancy a relaxed bite in our bar, you can enjoy the same menu there.

We serve bar lunches from 12.30 to 3pm, and dinner from 5 to 9pm (last orders 8.30pm), Monday to Saturday. We offer lunch on Sundays from 12 to 8pm (last orders 7.30pm). Our bar is open for drinks every day from midday.  For our opening hours during the festive period see here.

We can cater for gluten free, dairy free and vegan dietary requirements with prior notice and we offer a children’s menu too.

Dogs are permitted in the bar but not the main restaurant. We have limited tables to dine with your dog for residents only, please call us in advance to check availability.

Advance booking is strongly recommended in order to avoid disappointment. You can book your table here.

Dogs

We love dogs and have several of our own.  Well-behaved pooches are welcome in our bar area, but not in our restaurant and all our bedrooms are dog friendly. We have a Doggy Welcome Pack for our overnight canine guests, which includes a treat, a map of local walks and poo bags.
